Panther River Retreat (Sunset Guiding & Outfitting)

This was the location of the AWA Paddle Fest in 2018, and will be again this year.

Tenting: $15.75 per night

RV & Camper: $21 (w/o) $26.25 (with Power)

There are cabins, campground, showers and dining facilities on site.

The site is pre-reserved, please pay your camping fees when you arrive.

The Panther River Retreat is located 65 kms from Sundre on the Red Deer River Road. 4.7 km up the Panther River Road from Intersection (100 M past bridge) at Mountain Aire Lodge.

If you have never paddled the Upper Red Deer this is a great stretch of river with many different runs on it - Grade II with some Class III features that make this a "go to" river.

If you are nervous about upping your game, there will be experienced paddlers to ease your way.

Potential Runs:

1.0 YaHa Tinda put in

- I have never paddled the section between YaHa Tinda and the bridge

- It is rumoured to be braided with sweepers

- There is also the Panther River ledge (II - III)

2.0 Panther River or Mountain Aire Lodge put in

2.1 Gooseberry Ledge Takeout (10.7 or 7.7 Km)

- The only significant feature during this run (Big Rock) is now high and dry.

-The Panther River Ledges are just above the Panther River put in.

- While not guaranteed to have enough water in September, there is the possibility of putting in at the camp ground on the Panther River.

2.2 "S" Bend takeout (12.2 or 9.2 Km)

- Gooseberry Ledge (III - IV) is portagable

- Jimbo's Staircase (III - IV) is not

- "S" Bend wave is also avoidable (II – III)

3.0 Gooseberry Ledge put in

3.1 “S” Bend takeout (1.5 Km)

- Short day run, ideal for last day

3.2 Wysenchuk's Crossing (12.1 Km)

- Excellent run for the full day

- This Includes the “Nationals”
