Poling Clinic (functional) - basic outline
registration opens July 12, registration is open to the Public/non-CCC members
Participants: Comfortable canoeing, some moving water familiarity
Canoe: tandem, some rocker, Ceyana Canoes at BV have been booked for this program.
Pole: ~10-12foot wood or aluminium (Charles will bring several as well)
Helmet: at discretion of instructor and conditions (participants will be standing in canoe)
Conditions: Shallow moving water (less than 1m), some shallow still water for basic skills development, some moving with rock garden/small drops or ledge. Gravel bottom is preference.
Outcome: Basic understanding of poling canoe. Ability to move canoe up and down stream in light current, with control using various techniques.
- Introduction - basic intro to poling, what it is and conditions it is useful, equipment, and philosophy of pushing tool.
- Start/stop - straight lines. Stances, plant, and alternative placements and pole use (pushing, paddling)
- Side displacement, Turns
- Basic upstream poling, use of eddies, ferries, etc...
- Basic snubbing (downstream), control in current, enter/exit eddies
- bit of a tour (if applicable)
